Introductory workshop and contact improvisation jam
MARTIAL ARTS - QUALITY FOR DANCE
Contact improvisation is a dance technique in which fluidity of movement, flexibility, the ability to react quickly, and the ability to function safely in unpredictable situations play a particularly important role. Similar skills can also be found in martial arts.
In martial arts, almost every action is based on contact with a partner, and observing these movements allows for a better understanding of the mechanics of the body. By changing the way of thinking—focusing less on competition and more on observation and cooperation—and paying attention to the tempo, strength, tension, and range of movement, one can discover precise tools for working with the body. The same principles can be creatively adapted in dance practice.
The introductory workshop before the contact improvisation jam is Michał Ratajski's original proposal. It combines elements of martial arts – including kung fu, capoeira, aikido, and krav maga – with movement and dance, focusing on expression, interaction, and communication through the body. During the workshop, participants will primarily observe, experiment, and develop their curiosity about movement and somatic awareness of the body.
