THE BODY IN SPACE
The third edition of Open Stage at the Pavilion of Dance and Other Performing Arts. Join us at
SITE-SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE
“Body in Space”.

“Body in Space” is an outdoor performance that invites the audience to experience architecture in a new way. It is an encounter between dance and space through touch. The body becomes a tool of cognition, and the place a partner in dialogue.

The performance is inspired by Juhani Pallasma’s idea (“The Eyes of the Skin”), according to which true cognition of space engages all the senses, above all touch. In a dance technique called partnering, touch provides the body with spatial orientation; it is a means of communication and relationship-building. Thanks to touch and proprioception, we know how our body is positioned and how it comes into contact with others.
The dancers improvise, reacting to the characteristics of the space—its texture, weight, temperature, and acoustics. The question arises: can architecture become a partner? What kind of partner, and what kind of dance dialogue might emerge from this?

An integral part of the performance is the sound created live from the contact of bodies with surfaces, processed in real time using a voice looper, which amplifies the multidimensional sensations.
“Body in Space” is an invitation to a multisensory experience of places and to discovering touch as the primal language of cognition—of the body, relationships, and space.
