"Exercises from Memory"
Dance is, by its very nature, an ephemeral form that lasts only as long as it is performed. Nevertheless, today, with the development of audiovisual and digital technologies, it is possible to create, record, and publish two-dimensional images of dance online, as well as to digitize existing archives and make them widely accessible. This leap in time—working with archives—is becoming increasingly common, restoring knowledge and imagery of dance creators from the period when techniques for recording moving images were taking shape. In this way, the image of dancers becomes a new source of knowledge and inspiration for contemporary dancers. The body’s memory expands and takes on new meanings—it becomes a highly personal archive of knowledge about dance. Memory, like the body, can be trained—to remember more, better, and in greater detail.
During the two-day event organized by the Warsaw Dance Museum at the Pavilion, digital recordings of Polish liberated dance will be used, juxtaposing it with German Freie Tanz, in the context of French danse libre, and setting Hungarian Mozdulat Müvèszet—otherwise known as The Art of Movement—as a backdrop. The exercises will be performed and presented to the public by an intergenerational group consisting of Iwona Wojnicka and Marta Kosieradzka, together with students from the Dance Department of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice: Sandra Jaszczyk, Paulina Świtalska, Malena Skuza, Julia Łukaszewicz, Klara Horak, Zoe Marston, and Joanna Wolak. The event will be accompanied by composers India Czajkowska and Andrzej Rejman, as well as documentary filmmaker Andrzej Chuszno.
