Following an impressive tour of dozens of European cities and successes at major festivals such as Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Belgium, Tanzmesse in Germany, and the Biennale de Lyon in France, the performance “Vagabundus” is coming to Poland for the first time! The Pavilion of Dance and Other Performing Arts invites you to a unique opportunity to see a Mozambican work of new choreography in Warsaw.
“Vagabundus” is the most personal choreography by Idio Chichava—one of the most important contemporary dance artists in Africa. In this high-energy performance, thirteen dancers dance and sing non-stop for over an hour, drawing on both traditional and contemporary Mozambican songs, as well as gospel motifs and Baroque inspirations. This intense, physical stage experience demonstrates that community allows us to transcend boundaries.
The artist explores migration processes and their meanings through movement and physicality. Repetition, fatigue, rhythm, and group experience become key elements here. The choreographer draws inspiration from the dance rituals of the Makonde people of Mozambique, in which dance and song have served for centuries as a vehicle for collective memory and social values. Working in Mozambique and France, Chichava transforms these traditions into a contemporary choreographic language, creating one of the most intriguing new choreographic works of recent years—both in Africa and in Europe.
“Vagabundus” is an energetic performance that resonates on both the individual and collective levels. It creates a dialogue between the performers and the audience, building a bridge between Mozambican culture and the European audience. The presentation of the performance to the Warsaw audience around International Dance Day is no coincidence—it aligns with the idea of openness and intercultural dialogue, serving as an invitation to experience what is unknown yet universal.
A discussion with the artists will follow the performance on Sunday, April 26.
