The way to the DANCE pavilion
    2023

The project to create the PAVILION OF DANCE AND OTHER PERFORMING ARTS was launched in 2023 by the Warsaw Bureau of Culture.

The initiative aimed to create and design the format of a one-year pilot program for dance, choreography, and performance through open consultations and research. The Warsaw community of dance and choreography artists, as well as institutions and organizations working in this field—which had for many years called for a dedicated space for dance in the capital—were invited to discuss the new venue. The community consultations ran from September 2023 to March 2024 and were led by the Warsaw Observatory of Culture.
    2025

Since February 7, 2025, the Pavilion building has been undergoing modernization, which will transform it from an exhibition space into a performance venue.

The Pavilion on the Vistula is located in Powiśle, at Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 22, near the Copernicus Science Center and the University of Warsaw Library (BUW). It was designed by the Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz.

From 2008 to 2010, it served as the temporary home of the Kunsthalle in Berlin. In 2016, the Pavilion was loaned to the Museum free of charge by the Vienna-based Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation, established in 2002 by Francesca von Habsburg. The foundation works to promote experimental art and architecture.

Midway through the year, the Pavilion’s team expanded with the addition of production staff. The Pavilion team consists of: Alicja Berejowska (curator), Renata Piotrowska-Auffret (curator), Filip Pawlak (lead producer), Joanna Bury (junior producer), Dagmar Torłop (junior producer), Anna Cygankiewicz (communications coordinator), and Magdalena Komornicka (branch manager).

The pilot curatorial program, curated by Renata Piotrowska-Auffret and Alicja Berejowska, began in early January. In accordance with the competition rules, the Pavilion will present at least 5 premieres, 150 events on its premises, and 20 outdoor events. The detailed program and ticket sales are available under the "Repertoire" tab!
    2024

On April 4, 2024, the City Council passed an amendment to the charter of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, establishing the Pavilion on the Vistula as a branch of the Museum.

At its session on March 14, 2024, the Council awarded the Museum (MSN) an investment grant for modernization work and the purchase of equipment for the Pavilion. In June 2024, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Warsaw Bureau of Culture announced an open competition for a concept for a pilot curatorial program for the space of the PAVILION OF DANCE AND OTHER PERFORMING ARTS.

On November 15, 2024, the jury for the second stage of the competition—composed of Agnieszka Wyrwał (Chair of the City Culture and Promotion Committee, Warsaw City Councilor), Aldona Machnowska-Góra (Deputy Mayor of Warsaw), Artur Jóźwik (Director of the Bureau of Culture at Warsaw City Hall), Zofia Dworakowska (Chair of the Social Council for Culture), Julia Hoczyk (representative of the Sectoral Commission for Social Dialogue on dance), Joanna Leśnierowska (representative of the Warsaw Observatory of Culture), Szymon Żydek (Deputy Director for Operations, MSN), Sylwia Kłyczek (HR consultant, MSN), and Magdalena Komornicka (Head of the Pavilion on the Vistula branch, MSN), recommended for further development the concept submitted by the team represented by Alicja Berejowska, Renata Piotrowska-Auffret, and Joanna Szymajda.
