Open Stage: Workshops and Milongas
Queer Tango Fest
QUEER TANGO FEST is a two-day event celebrating queer tango in Warsaw. Queer tango refers to any way of dancing tango that goes beyond the heteronormative and patriarchal division of roles—the man leading, the woman following. It primarily brings together LGBTQI+ people, but remains open to anyone who wants to experience tango in an atmosphere of equality and freedom.

Queer dance practices allow us to return to tango’s working-class, migrant, and rogue roots and reclaim this dance for people who feel marginalized within it. Tango originated in the poor neighborhoods of Buenos Aires among former slaves, down-and-out gauchos, and impoverished immigrants. It blended African rhythms, European dances, and elements of combat. It emerged as a grassroots, rebellious underworld culture—in opposition to the elites and open to non-heteronormative couples.

The festival program will feature two tango workshops—one for beginners and one for advanced dancers—two milongas, and a performance by a professional queer tango couple.
Tango is, above all, a social dance. The community gathers at milongas—dance parties based on simple rules. A milonga is a dance ritual that allows people to form bonds and build a sense of community. It is the milongas that serve as the festival’s highlights.

Queer Tango Fest is aimed at both the local tango community and queer tango communities from other cities and countries. The event also welcomes anyone interested in tango and queer culture who hasn’t yet had the chance to dance. With them in mind, workshops for beginners have been prepared.

Space – Get Out of My Way! Workshop with Arno Cuca
This workshop focuses on the space that dancers collectively create on the dance floor during a milonga. Its goal is to better understand this constantly shifting arrangement in the context of our bodies’ axes. Given the broad scope of the concept of space in dance, the workshop will be suitable for dancers of various skill levels.

CONTACTANGO Workshops
We’ll explore tools for finding connection within a couple. We’ll discover rhythm. We’ll play with the forces interacting between two bodies, rotations, and the density of movement—all within an intimate and sensitive atmosphere.

Duration: 420 min.
The name under which Joanna Danak and Jul Ludert have been creating a tango space open to everyone—especially LGBTQI+ people—for nearly two years. They launched the initiative in January 2024 out of a need to create a safe space in Warsaw where queer people and others could explore tango in roles not dictated by social expectations.
They organize a queer milonga on the last Monday of every month at the Młodsza Siostra club and dining hall.

They strive to promote the idea of queer tango and open roles. On several occasions before milongas, they’ve organized workshops on learning the “second” role, led by tango teachers from the queer community. They also organize a series of queer tango classes for beginners.
In this way, they aim to help people step outside their comfort zones so they can discover queer tango.
