The way to the DANCE pavilion
    2023

The project to create the PAVILION OF DANCE AND OTHER PERFORMING ARTS was launched in 2023 by the Warsaw Bureau of Culture.

The initiative aimed to create and design the format of a one-year pilot programme for dance, choreography and performance, through open consultations and research. The Warsaw community of dance and choreography artists, as well as institutions and organisations working in this field that had for many years called for a dedicated place for dance in the capital, were invited to discuss the new venue. The community consultations ran from September 2023 to March 2024 and were led by the Warsaw Observatory of Culture.
    2025

Since 7 February 2025, the Pavilion building has been undergoing modernisation, which will change its function from an exhibition space to a performance venue.

The Pavilion on the Vistula is located in Powiśle, at Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 22, near the Copernicus Science Centre and the University of Warsaw Library (BUW). It was designed by the Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz.

From 2008 to 2010, it served as the temporary home of the Kunsthalle in Berlin. In 2016, the Pavilion was lent to the Museum free of charge by the Vienna-based Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary foundation, established in 2002 by Francesca von Habsburg. The foundation works to promote experimental art and architecture.

In the middle of the year, the Pavilion's team grew with the addition of production staff. The Pavilion team is made up of: Alicja Berejowska (curator), Renata Piotrowska-Auffret (curator), Filip Pawlak (lead producer), Joanna Bury (junior producer), Dagmar Torłop (junior producer), Anna Cygankiewicz (communications coordinator), Magdalena Komornicka (branch head).

The pilot curatorial programme, curated by Renata Piotrowska-Auffret and Alicja Berejowska, began in early January. In line with the terms of the competition, the Pavilion will present at least 5 premieres, 150 events on its premises and 20 outdoor events. The detailed programme and ticket sales are available in the "Repertoire" tab!
    2024

On 4 April 2024, the City Council passed an amendment to the statute of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, establishing the Pavilion on the Vistula as a branch of the Museum.

At its session on 14 March 2024, the Council awarded the Museum (MSN) an investment grant for modernisation work and the purchase of equipment for the Pavilion. In June 2024, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Warsaw Bureau of Culture announced an open competition for a concept for a pilot curatorial programme for the space of the PAVILION OF DANCE AND OTHER PERFORMING ARTS.

On 15 November 2024, the jury of the second stage of the competition, made up of Agnieszka Wyrwał (Chair of the City Culture and Promotion Committee, Warsaw City Councillor), Aldona Machnowska-Góra (Deputy Mayor of Warsaw), Artur Jóźwik (Director of the Bureau of Culture of the Warsaw City Hall), Zofia Dworakowska (Chair of the Social Council for Culture), Julia Hoczyk (representative of the Sectoral Commission for Social Dialogue on dance), Joanna Leśnierowska (representative of the Warsaw Observatory of Culture), Szymon Żydek (Deputy Director for Operations, MSN), Sylwia Kłyczek (HR consultant, MSN) and Magdalena Komornicka (Head of the Pavilion on the Vistula branch, MSN), recommended for further development the concept of the team represented by Alicja Berejowska, Renata Piotrowska-Auffret and Joanna Szymajda.
